Why You Should Toss Your Stock Spool Holder

It frustrates me to see printer manufacturers still including filament holders that mount directly to the frame of printers, especially when it's at the very top. Printer manufacturers spend so much time trying to perfect the print quality of their machines only to attach a spool holder on top, holding a full KG of filament, that will amplify the vibrations of the printer's movements, causing increased ghosting in your prints. The extra weight on your frame will force you to lower printing speeds to get good parts. Thankfully, the 3D printing community is very resourceful and has plenty of solutions available.

Some Printable Alternatives

Sweet and Simple: "TUSH"

TUSH is a simple but effective spool feeding solution created by Thingiverse user "Filamentry," that you can download here. The only external parts you need are four 608 bearings. With thousands of downloads, it's hard to go wrong with this design!

Absolute Overkill: Spannerhands

A complete overkill, but beautiful nonetheless. The Spannerhands spool mounting system gives you the option of wall mounting and keeping dust away from your printer. While a much more intensive project than the previous TUSH, it also doubles as an art piece. You can learn more about this design here.

A No Compromise Solution

Sexy and Dry: Fula-Box

While all the other solutions are fantastic in their own right, none of them help keep your filament dry, a critical factor for materials such as PETG, TPU, and Nylon. That's why we set out and made Fula-Box, the sexy filament solution that keeps your filament dry, feeds to your printer smoothly, and has looks to kill. With every box comes a humidity sensor, 80 grams of desiccants, and roller bearings.

I hope you've enjoyed learning about all the different options and found one that is suitable for you. They each feature their pros and cons, but most importantly, they remove the weight of the filament off your printer's frame, allowing you to print faster and with better quality.
